This collection of anthems serves many different seasonal and liturgical needs. Three of the compositions are for unaccompanied choir: “Tristis Est Anima Mea” (“My Soul Is Sad unto Death”), “O Salutaris Hostia” (“O Saving Victim”) and “Holy Is the True Light,” which is the most demanding of the three.
Three of the anthems celebrate the Blessed Virgin Mary. “Alma Redemptoris Mater” (“Kind Mother of the Redeemer”), “Eia Mater” (which is based on a stanza from the famous 13th-century poem “Stabat Mater” attributed to Jacopo da Todi), and “Hodie Aperuit” (“Today Appears”), an uplifting setting of a text by Hildegard of Bingen.
Finally, “Haec Dies” and “Ye Choirs of New Jerusalem” explore the glorious sound of the full SATB chorus with organ and, in the case of “Haec Dies” brass quartet. Both pieces are appropriate for Easter.
